The Chartered Accountants Cork Society held their Annual Christmas Lunch in the Maryborough House Hotel on today, Friday 9th December. A capacity attendance of 300 people representing a cross section of some of the most significant business sectors in the local economy as well as practices of all sizes attended. The seasonal spirit was kicked off with a mulled wine reception. After lunch guest speaker Mickey Harte, well known Manager of Tyrone Football team and GAA personality easily entertained the audience in his own unique style. Amongst the distinguished guests who were in attendance was The Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald.
Addressing the gathering, Cork Society Chairperson, Anthony Reidy (PricewaterhouseCoopers) highlighted the achievements and events of the organisation over the last 12 months. Acknowledging the challenging times that we find ourselves in Anthony emphasised the importance of genuine Corporate Social Responsibility and the role that can be played by Chartered Accountants. In doing so he highlighted the very worthwhile work that is being done by those local Chartered Accountants who have volunteered their time to become part of the Chartered Accountants Voluntary Advice Service (CAVA). This service which has been rolled out in the last month in Cork in conjunction with MABS and Citzen’s Information Centres involves Chartered Accountants voluntarily giving of their time and expertise to those less well-off within our communities and in need of our services. Anthony went on to say that “the way in which local members have embraced this initiative is testament to the values which members consider important and it is heartening to see these foundation of values emerge when everybody has been challenged by the economic events of recent times. I believe we need to celebrate and expose those values and, in doing so, help rebalance the perception of a profession we are all proud to be associated with”
Local charity, Edel House were delighted to again this year benefit from the generosity of those attending in our annual toy collection.
